Meet the Director
The Columbia University Institute for Research in African-American Studies (IRAAS) proudly announces its first Summer Teachers and Scholars Institute. Convening between Monday, 11 July and Friday, 15 July, 2016, the one-week Summer Teacher's and Scholar's Institute (STSI), focusing particularly on the history, cultures, and institutions of African-descended peoples in New York City. New York, home to Harlem and numerous other historic black enclaves, historically and today is one of the capitals of Black America, and even the Black World. This Summer Institute offers what few others are able: the opportunity to study African-American history, culture, politics, and life through the lens of New York, and in New York, and together we will explore various historical and contemporary themes, including the New Negro Movement and the Harlem Renaissance; Educating Harlem (and Beyond): Histories of Black Education in New York City; Civil Rights, 1940-the present; Black Women Intellectuals; "Beyond Harlem: Brooklyn and the Bronx"; and Race, Policing and Criminal Justice, 1880-present. We enthusiastically invite applications from high school and college/university instructors, independent scholars and researchers, public historians and other professionals, biographers, journalists, and graduate students.
This year's STSI will bring to you some of the leading scholars in their fields who will guide us through the many worlds of Black New York: education, policing, the world of black women intellectuals, Civil Rights, arts and culture, and more. As a group – invited scholars, STSI participants, and our staff of coordinators – we collectively will discuss the relevant issues, create multi-media lesson plans, have meals together, and tour the City’s historic black sites and institutions!
Tuition will be $1,800 USD, and we are proud to announce that we will be able to make available a limited number of partial fellowships to those who apply. For updates on STSI, please sign up for updates and visit our Facebook page, which is open to everyone. You also are encouraged to send your questions to our STSI staff at stsi@columbia.edu. We look forward to having you join us for a fantastic and memorable summer!
Sincerely,
